Staff Book Review by Liz

The Elephant Keepers' Children by Peter Hoeg I read this book before heading to Copenhagen last fall as I thought a Danish author might enhance the journey. Little did I know what a treat I had in store! Zany plot of children trying to stop their parents from religious world domination.  Fun, fast paced story, with endearing characters and keen insight into the ever so fallible workings of human nature.  I enjoyed every minute of it and Peter Hoeg is now one of my favorite authors!

When Life Gives You LuLuLemons by Lauren Weisberger And life certainly has these days... until Lauren Weisberger comes along with an ice cold glass of lemonade!  A follow up to The Devil Wears Prada, this book is the perfect summer read!  Funny, fast-paced and full of unforeseen foibles and friendships, Emily Charlton takes her image consulting firm to the gossips of Greenwich, and the suburbs will never look the same again. Towel, sunscreen, mask and this book in your bag, and you are all set for the beach this summer. Happy Reading!

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman "The moment hung in time like a drop of honey from a spoon, heavy, golden. Despite covering some very complex themes, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is actually an uplifting story about one women's journey back into the world of love and self-acceptance. A social misfit with a traumatic past, the novel follows the interior workings of Eleanor's mind as she is determined to find her way out of isolation and into the world we call "mainstream". Quirkiness and deadpan humor abound as the novel begs the question what it really means to be human.  A light read, that touches upon universal truths everyone can relate to, I highly recommend this book for it's portrayal of what it means to persevere!

Local History

Did you know there are 100 National Historical Sites in Huntington alone?  One of these is the Arthur Dove-Helen Torr Cottage on Centershore Road here in Centerport.  Arthur Dove was one of the most influential American artists in the early modernist movement. His wife Helen was also a painter and close friends with Georgia O'Keeffee. The couple moved into the cottage in 1938 where Dove would paint some of his most important works, finding inspiration in the area around Centerport Harbor.  Dove passed away in 1946, Torr passed passed in 1967. The cottage they shared was added to the National Register of Historic Landmarks in 2000. You can explore their paintings and learn more about the cottage in the links below. Little Weirds by Jenny Slate " I was a citizen of the world of breezes and Sticky-Dog-Face-Flowers." Jenny Slate Little Weirds is like a self-help book for the slightly "left of center" soul. A collection of vignettes, her impeccable writing and the raw honesty of her musings resonate as she grapples with the universal insights of love, loneliness and how to find oneself amidst all the madness. A true gem, I look forward to returning to it over and over.

The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic by Mike Duncan        Julius Caesar, Cicero, Marc Antony, Cleopatra, and Octavian; the figures that dominated the period as Rome transitioned from Republic to Empire will echo through history. It is one of the most widely studied periods in Western History and yet it was only the culmination of over a hundred years of political upheaval. In  Storm Before the Storm , Mike Duncan, from the hit podcast “History of Rome,” covers this often-overlooked period in Roman history. Beginning with the reforms of the Gracchi Brothers through to the devastating Civil War between Marius and Sulla, Duncan crafts an epic narrative of how a republic can slip into tyranny. From political battles in the forum, to military conquests across the Mediterranean,  Storm   is an exciting and easy read, suitable for beginner and expert alike. To read the ebook CLICK HERE

Peek-A-Book! I see a radish! Today I added more soil to the pot to cover that up and give it some more time to grow and then strung up my peas on a little piece of lattice I had lying around. Below is a great blog I found while looking for directions on how to germinate an avocado seed! You can find lots of gardening tips that are simple and easy to follow. https://empressofdirt.net

Liz's Book Review

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles "It was, without question, the smallest room that he had occupied in his life; yet somehow, within those four walls the world had come and gone."  Amor Towles I can't believe this book didn't come to mind earlier, especially during this time of quarantine! Aristocrat Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life, in the attic of a hotel outside the Kremlin during the Bolshevik Revolution. As decades of the outside world pass him by, his life indoors grows exponentially. Towles is an amazing writer and story teller. You will be transported. A modern day classic!
